How to keep yourself moving through the holidays

With the change in season comes challenges to staying active. Shorter days and colder temps mean less opportunity to get outside comfortably. In addition to the natural changes, we also have the holidays to contend with. Increased consumption of rich foods, alcohol and more social engagements can also derail a positive and healthy routine. Here are a few tips to keep you moving through this holiday season:

  • Get out at lunch. If your usual routine of morning or evening walking has been cut short, make an effort to get out in the middle of the day. Many days the temps are perfect for walking.

  • Bundle up and grab a headlamp. Even when cold and dark, walking can be a pleasant and positive experience. Throw on a beanie and some gloves and bring a charged headlamp to extend your walking time.

  • Invest in hiking poles. With snowy and icy conditions, adding a little insurance is a good idea. Hiking poles are a great way to keep you stable and avoid a slip and fall.

  • Find exercise classes to replace outdoor time. This is a great time of year to find indoor activities to keep you moving.

  • Embrace the change. Most importantly, appreciate the change in season. If you get stuck wishing for summer, you’ll be disappointed with winter. Embrace what nature has to offer and you’ll find some amazing experiences that you may have avoided with the wrong mentality.

  • On that same note, find some new winter activities! Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are both great winter activities that can be done safely and allow for outdoor enjoyment in the winter months. Most resorts offer beginner classes to show you the ropes and get you started.
